Devon Capital was created in 2010 to manage the financial affairs of the Gorki family upon the death of Sol Gorki – Matthew Shapiro’s maternal grandfather. Sol Gorki was not only brave for surviving the Holocaust but also entrepreneurial. When he moved to America, he was able to raise enough capital to create a religious article import/export business in 1950 called Devon Trading Company. The Company mainly imported Catholic items from Europe and sold them to churches throughout the US. He successfully ran the business for 40 years until he sold to his partner in 1990. The majority of the proceeds were used to buy real estate across New Jersey. The real estate portfolio has since expanded to properties in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Westchester. In addition, the family has diversified into hedge funds, private equity and private credit. Matthew Shapiro has managed the family office since 2010.
